Paint a
value scale of tints.

Using red straight from the bottle or
tube, paint the first block in the scale.

Next, mix the tiniest amount of white
with red [remember you must mix your colors on your palette thoroughly
first!]. Adjust as necessary to achieve only one step higher in value.
[Hint – paint dries a little darker or lighter than it looks wet. Test
yours on a scrap piece of paper. Is it darker when it’s dry or lighter?]

Now, take some white and mix the
tiniest amount of red with it. Why did we move to work on the right when
we were working on the left? Because you will tend to waste less
paint by mixing colors into white to achieve your tint rather than white
into colors.

Continue to create your tints of red
from right to left.

Paint the last square white.
