Paint a
value scale of shades.

Using red straight from the bottle or
tube, paint the last block in the scale. That will be the block
on the far right.

Next, mix the tiniest amount of black
into the red. Try to achieve the very slightest difference in value.

Continue to mix
tiny amounts of black into red as you move from right to left on your
value scale.
