Working with Color and Paint

Working with paint and color can be challenging for someone just starting out. Even after you understand the basic concepts of color, putting them into action can be difficult. The activities here are meant to be done with water based paint like tempera, gouache, or acrylics.

Download the worksheets and print them out on card stock or other paper that is thick enough not to wrinkle up while you are painting. [The worksheet is in MS Word format. You can print it directly from the web or click File/ Save as and save it to your computer before printing.]

Before you start, be sure you understand these two rules:

Paint must be mixed on the palette thoroughly before applying it to the paper.
Paint must be thick enough to be opaque. [Hint – wipe the water off of the brush after rinsing it. You’ll have to experiment with this one because paint must be fluid enough to flow onto the paper and thick enough to be opaque. In some cases you may have to apply two coats.]
