Unit 1: Introduction and Overview
- Topic 1 - Elements and Principles
Students use the elements and principles of art to create a reference book on
their use. Following are the handouts and worksheets used for this section of the course:
- Topic 2 - Aesthetics
Aesthetics is the study or philosophy of the ideas of beauty. In this class, we
look at a few theories of art and learn how to apply those theories. After viewing a
PowerPoint presentation and doing an interactive handout on it, students form into teams
and create a bulletin board presentation of their assigned theory of art:
- Topic 3 - Art History
In This section of the course, students work in pairs to create a PowerPoint Presentation
of an assigned period in art history.

Unit 2: Line, Rhythm and Movement
- Topic 1 - Line and Rhythm
Students learn about and experiment with different types and
variations of line. Students learn about descriptive and expressive
qualities of line.
The principle of art, Rhythm, is combined with line to produce a
non-objective design in this project.
Following are the handouts and worksheets used for
this section of the course:
- Topic 2 - Art Criticism
Using the four steps of art criticism, students learn to observe
artwork more closely and understand it on a deeper level. The four steps
are: Description, Analysis, Interpretation and Judgement.
